Institutional Biosafety Committee

About the IBC

BIDMC's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) provides local review and oversight of all research that involves recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecules, as well as research involving potentially hazardous biological materials and infectious agents. We aim to assist and advise Principal Investigators in meeting their responsibilities to ensure that the biological aspects of their research are conducted using approved biosafety standards and in accordance with The NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines).

The NIH Guidelines detail procedures and practices for the containment and safe conduct of various forms of recombinant DNA research, including research involving genetically modified plants and animals, and human gene transfer. Principal investigators (PIs) are responsible for full compliance with the NIH Guidelines during the conduct of recombinant DNA research.
