Message from the Department Chair
The Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine is dedicated to advancing the field of perioperative medicine and the science of anesthesia by generating new knowledge through research and innovation. We work to develop future leaders in research through mentorship, intensive research training and education. We support our researchers from idea generation through study completion and publication.
Consistent with this goal, our faculty and trainees are actively involved in a wide array of ongoing clinical and laboratory research projects.

Intravenous acetaminophen: A new way to reduce occurrence of postoperative delirium in elderly patients
Postoperative delirium can afflict as many as half of patients who undergo cardiac surgery and is particularly common and dangerous in older patients. Researchers at BIDMC Department of Anesthesia identified a new method to reduce the occurrence of post-operative delirium.

It’s Never Too Late: The Role of Mast Cells in the Development of Post-Traumatic Headache
Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms following a mild traumatic brain injury. Dara Bree and Dan Levy from the Department of Anesthesia at BIDMCs shed light on the role of a particular type of immune cell known as mast cells in PTH following a mild closed head injury.

On February 13, 2019, during the annual Anesthesia Week celebration, Dr. Daniel Talmor, the Anesthesia Department Chair announced that the first incumbent of the Ellison “Jeep” Pierce Endowed Chair will be Dr. Balachundhar Subramaniam.
