Stroke Care Measures at BIDMC
In 2018 BIDMC received Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission. Hospitals achieve this certification by demonstrating that they have specific training and resources in Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Radiology, Lab Services and Nursing Care to receive and treat the most complex stroke patients. The Stroke Care team assures that we are consistently providing the best care to our stroke patients based on National, State, and Internal Stroke Care guidelines.
Since 2008, BIDMC has been recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health as a Primary Stroke Service Provider.
BIDMC also participates in the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association's “Get with the Guidelines Stroke” program — a national collaborative aimed at ensuring best practices and strong outcomes for all Stroke patients.

Stroke Mortality Data
What Are We Measuring?
Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 87% of strokes are Ischemic strokes, where blood flow to the brain is blocked and causes damage to brain tissue.
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center monitors the 30-Day Mortality Rate for Ischemic Stroke — which is the percentage of ischemic stroke patients who died within 30 days of admission to the hospital. Death rates provide information about important aspects of hospital care that affect patients’ outcomes — like prevention of and response to complications, emphasis on patient safety, and the timeliness of care.
How Are We Performing?

Data Source: CMS Hospital Compare
Data Period: 7/1/2018 - 6/30/2021
BIDMC performance is statistically similar to the National Rate.
Post-Procedure Outcomes
30-Day Post CEA and TCAR Stroke and Death Rates
BIDMC performs procedures such as Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) or Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) for patients with stroke or at risk for stroke due to blockage of a carotid artery. The rates of stroke or death within the 30 days following CEA and TCAR are displayed below, the rates are separated by patients with or without stroke symptoms caused by carotid artery narrowing. Rates of 30-day death and complications for CEA and TCAR patients at BIDMC are well below the maximum national recommended rate of 6%.
