Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine

Critical Illness and COVID-19 Survivorship Program

Patients who have survived COVID-19 or have been in the intensive care unit for other reasons often have continued difficulty with recovery and persistent symptoms long after their initial illness. These symptoms may include difficulty with breathing, muscle weakness, increased heart rate, dizziness, problems with thinking and memory, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress. Our survivorship program cares for patients who have survived COVID-19 of any severity as well as patients who have been in the intensive care unit from other causes. Our goal is to help patients and families regain their quality of life after COVID-19 and other critical illnesses.

Medical ICU and Inpatient Consultation Service

The Medical Intensive Care Units (MICUs) cares for critically ill patients. We have on-site critical care specialists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The MICUs are located on BIDMC's East and West Campuses.

Inpatient consultation is available for hospitalized patients with a range of lung diseases and symptoms. The Pulmonary Consultation Service is available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week on both East and West Campuses.

We also provide consultative services for a range of sleep disorders that matter to inpatients. This innovative inpatient service provides important support for managing sleep-disordered breathing. This includes care for patients with peri-operative issues and heart failure.

Pulmonary Ambulatory Center

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Pulmonary Function Lab performs a range of tests to evaluate lung function. These include spirometry, pre- and post-bronchodilator studies, lung volumes, plethysmography, diffusing capacity, Oximetry, 6-minute walk tests, MIP/MEP, Methacholine challenge, Arterial puncture for ABG, Hypoxic Altitude Simulation Testing, and Cardio-Pulmonary stress testing.

The Pulmonary Function Lab also provides education and consultation in the areas of pulmonary physiology and pulmonary function testing to medical students, housestaff, fellows in training and staff physicians.

Testing of lung function for outpatients is performed in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory, located on the first floor of the Rabb building, East Campus.

Pulmonary Hypertension Center

BIDMC's Pulmonary Hypertension Center provides a state-of-the-art multidisciplinary approach to the evaluation and treatment of pulmonary hypertension. Specialists in a number of disciplines, including pulmonary medicine, cardiology, radiology, physical therapy, and nursing collaborate to provide comprehensive services for patients with pulmonary hypertension and their families. Services are provided in the Pulmonary Hypertension Center located in the Shapiro Clinical Center, East Campus.
