Becoming a BIDMC Volunteer

Volunteer Application Process & Opportunities


Our application process involves the following:

  • Submit an Application: Complete the application form and provide two references. Applicants must be at least 15 years old at the time of application.
  • Interview: Qualified applicants will be invited to an interview. Interviews are scheduled Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
  • Background Check (Adults Only): Adult volunteers must complete a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) check.
  • Health Clearance (required for in-person roles):
    Volunteers must show proof of immunity for the following:
    • Measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR): Two doses required. Positive antibody titers may be accepted as proof of immunity in place of vaccination records.
    • Varicella (chickenpox): Two doses required. Positive antibody titers may be accepted to confirm immunity, including a history of disease.
    • COVID-19: Currently, one vaccine received on or after September 2023 or three vaccines received prior to September 2023 meets the requirement. Requirements are subject to change. Please submit all vaccine records.
    • Flu vaccine: Required if you are starting between September 15 and April 1 (will be required annually).
    • Hepatitis B vaccination: Strongly recommended for volunteers who may have patient contact. Proof of immunity or a signed declination form will be required.
  • Training & Orientation: All volunteers must attend training and orientation, which are held Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.

Examples of What BIDMC Volunteers Do

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and bring a wide range of experiences and skills.

All you need is a willingness to give your time! We’ll provide any training you need to get started. Some of the ways volunteers contribute include:

  • Greeting newly admitted patients
  • Delivering comfort items to patient rooms
  • Providing companionship and conversation
  • Escorting patients to appointments or procedures
  • Assisting during the discharge process
  • Stocking supplies on clinical units
  • Providing respite and presence during end-of-life care
  • Making patient kits and care bags
  • Assisting with light clerical work
