Cardiac surgery research at the CardioVascular Institute is among the top-funded programs of its kind by the National Institutes of Health. The surgeons in the Division of Cardiac Surgery are all engaged in research aimed at improving treatments for cardiovascular patients.

Major Research Focus: Behavior of heart valves in both normal and pathologic states and understanding the pathophysiology of and devising management strategies for valvular disease 
PI: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), mitral valve repair, predictive markers of postoperative adverse events, 3D printing for cardiac repair

Sidney Levitsky, MD 
Major Research Focus: Elucidating the mechanisms and subcellular localization of biochemical and molecular events contributing to myocardial cell death
