Innovative Treatments, Coordinated Care for Aortic Disease
The Aortic Center at BIDMC is a national leader in the treatment of aortic disease. Under the direction of co-directors Marc Schermerhorn, MD, and Kamal Khabbaz, MD, and Medical Director Brett Carroll, MD, our multidisciplinary team includes cardiac surgeons and vascular surgeons, as well as specialists in vascular medicine and cardiovascular imaging, who work together to provide a range of comprehensive care for aortic aneurysm, aortic dissection, and ruptured aneurysm.
Our team is widely known and respected for its skill and experience in minimally invasive endovascular procedures and is able to offer this treatment option to many of our aortic patients, including patients requiring complex repair.
The Aortic Center also conducts extensive clinical and scientific research and provides patients with the opportunity to participate in clinical trials, many of which are led by our BIDMC doctors.
What is an Aortic Aneurysm?
An aortic aneurysm is a bulge caused by weakness or degeneration in the wall of the aorta, the body’s primary and largest artery. Left untreated, an aortic aneurysm can continue to grow until it ruptures, a potentially life-threatening situation that can develop without warning.
