Three Senators Save Millions
There can really only be one topic for any health care-related blog today: the defeat early this morning of the the so-called Skinny Repeal . We can thank two women, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski and one man, John McCain. Senator McCain's vote was the big news as both women have been steadfast and outspoken for some time. One can't help but wonder how much his recent diagnosis of a glioblastoma affected his decision It would be pretty hard to strip millions of Americans of healthcare while receiving the very best medical care possible. The other perspective is that he at this point has absolutely nothing to lose and can completely live up to his values. (and shouldn't they all be doing that all the time?)
FDA vs USDA Labeling Laws
Foods are labeled based on rules of the FDA and USDA. Foods labeled gluten-free by the FDA and USDA are fine for you to eat. If a food follows the rules of the FDA and is not labeled gluten-free, read the ingredients list and Contains statement for these words.
Level 3
Naturally gluten-free grains and flours NOT labeled gluten-free may be contaminated with wheat, barley, and rye. Under the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) proposed rule, labeled gluten-free grains and flours should contain less than 20 ppm of gluten. Manufacturers of labeled gluten-free grains and flours (and gluten-free products in general) take several steps to make sure their products truly are gluten-free. Level 2
Naturally gluten-free grains, flours, and starches may become contaminated with wheat, barley, and rye while being: grown if wheat, barley, or rye is grown in a field next to a gluten-free grain or if a gluten-free grain is grown in rotation with wheat, barley, or rye.
