Anna Johansson, PhD

Dr. Anna Johansson is an Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School and the Director of Social Science Research in the Division of Translational Research. Dr. Johansson's doctorate is in Sociology with emphasis in social psychology, complex organizations and social research methods. She brings theory and methodology from the social sciences to bear on a range of programs in the areas of medical education, simulation training, and team-based clinical quality improvement. Dr. Johansson works with the Shapiro Institute for Education and Research as the Assistant Director of Educational Research, and with Critical Care Quality in the Department of Medicine to advance research in the areas of medical team decision making and performance. Her current research activities involve the "translation" of theory and methods emanating from basic social science research in group decision making to examine, using novel behavioral measures, the extent to which a specific mechanism - the formation of social hierarchies - creates barriers to effective information exchange and team decision making in the ICU. Social hierarchies form in teams based on factors ranging from the diverse characteristics of individual team members to the culture of an organization and even a profession, all of which are relevant to healthcare

VA Rotations

The West Roxbury VA (aka West Rox) is one of the strengths of our program. Rotating at the VA gives you the opportunity to care for an entirely different patient population and to work with other residents in the Boston area. We have several rotations at the VA including the general wards, medical ICU, cardiology, and nightfloat. At any given time, there are approximately 6 interns and 4 residents from BIDMC rotating at the VA. Most interns are at the VA for 1-2 rotations over the course of the year whereas residents generally have one rotation every year. Rotations at West Rox are shared between the housestaff from BIDMC, Boston Medical Center, and Brigham and Women's Hospital, which gives you the opportunity to learn different practice styles and meet new people.

Cancer Related Fatigue

Any of us who have gone through cancer treatment have experienced some level of cancer fatigue. It is difficult to define or describe, but it is not like regular exhaustion. This morning, for example, I am just plain tired due to an unexpectedly long trip back from MN yesterday, a late night, and an early morning appointment. But I know I can just get through the day and a good night's sleep will solve the problem.

Pre existing Conditions

First, yes I know that it should be pre-existing conditions with a hyphen, but this system does not allow any punctuation in the title of a blog. All of us with cancer know about pre-existing conditions and surely know that we have a big one. One of the biggest advantages of the ACA/Obama Care has been the requirement that insurance companies sell coverage to people who have a pre-existing condition. This has been a promise for us, and many others, that we won't be shut out of the market.
