Simulation-Based Practice and Performance Assessment and Improvement (PPAI)

The Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center of Harvard Medical School offers the simulation-based component of the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesia (MOCA). Our center has received endorsement from the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) in 2010. This endorsement allows us to offer MOCA simulation courses, participate in the ASA Simulation Education Network, and contribute to advances in simulation. This simulation course fulfills one requirement of the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program Part IV. Please consult the ABA’s website for a list of all MOCA requirements.

Length: 1 day (6 hours)

Course Description

Anesthesiologist participants will actively manage realistic simulation scenarios that demonstrate clinical and technical skills as well as teamwork and communication. The participant to instructor ratio will not exceed 3 to 1, in order to provide a quality learning environment. Those participants without prior simulation experience will receive a thorough introduction to the mannequin, facility, and equipment before beginning any scenarios. After a customized pre-briefing, the participant will receive several scenarios that may focus on one of the following conditions: hemorrhage, hemoptysis, myocardial infarction, amniotic embolus, or seizure. Each participant is guaranteed to play the primary role in at least one scenario. Each session will be immediately followed by a video debriefing that will include mention of the relevant clinical and technical actions as well as the examples of team dynamics and communication skills. All recordings are for the benefit of the participant and will not be released from the Center.

Breakfast and lunch are provided.
