Resident Life at BIDMC

Camaraderie

The highlight of our residency program is our residents. Our residents have a strong camaraderie and get along well both in and outside of work. At work, residents sit together at lunch, often outside on “the steps” when it’s nice out. Outside of work, there are many resident wellness events and get-togethers at each other’s homes, including barbecuing in the summertime, happy hour after work, and — of course — Red Sox games at Fenway Park ($5 tickets for employees).

Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, is a fascinating place to spend your residency. As an international "university town," Boston's population is a rich mix of native Bostonians and scholars hailing from around the country and the world. The result is a vibrant and diverse community that is welcoming to many different lifestyles. Boston is rich in cultural and historic landmarks for weekend exploration and is a short drive from the ski slopes and hiking trails of New Hampshire and Vermont, and the beaches of Cape Cod and Rhode Island.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is located within the Longwood Medical and Academic area, home to some of the East Coast's premiere academic hospitals. We are blocks from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Joslin Diabetes Center, Children's Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital. We are affiliated with Harvard Medical School, which is located just down the street.

Boston’s many historic neighborhoods provide a wonderful backdrop for life during residency. You can enjoy a run along the Charles River, browse an eclectic bookstore, and savor first-class cuisine, all in an afternoon.

Most of our residents live in Fenway, Brookline, and Jamaica Plain; however, residents at BIDMC live in many corners of the Boston area, from the stylish flats of the Back Bay to the Victorian homes of Brookline, to more residential Newton, with backyards and gardens. Cambridge, located just across the river, is the home of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and is a fun place to visit or live.
