Social Events

We enjoy spending time together outside the hospital. We have monthly happy hours and organize outings to hear concerts in the park or catch a Red Sox game together. There are more formal (but fun) gatherings, including our annual July Residency Garden Party, Junior Resident retreat, Resident holiday party and secret snowflake gift exchange.

The City

Boston is a vibrant city. Small enough to walk across in 45 minutes, the city nonetheless offers countless cultural activities. During the summer there are outdoor concerts at the Hatch Shell, free performances of Shakepeare on the Common, and an impressive fireworks display on the Forth of July. Museums include the Museum of Fine Arts and Boston Science Museum. For classical music, visit the Boston Pops and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. As the home of the Boston Marathon, the city is a great place for runners of all speeds, with beautiful running routes along the Charles river and the Emerald Necklace. Biking is also popular; Hubway, a shared urban bike program, has multiple locations throughout Boston and Cambridge. Others enjoy sailing or kayaking, or simply relaxing in the city's abundance of green spaces. During the winter, head for nearby ski resorts in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Housing

Many of our residents live in Brookline, Jamaica Plain, Back Bay, and the South End, all of which are within walking distance of the hospital area. Some of our residents with families choose to live in the nearby suburbs and commute to work. Parking, MBTA subway passes, and Hubway memberships are available at subsidized rates through BIDMC.

Sports

Sports fans abound in Boston, between the New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins, and Boston Red Sox you can see a game at almost any time of the year. Enjoy $5 discounted Red Sox tickets for employees at BIDMC (the official hospital of the Boston Red Sox). High demand tickets to playoff games are auctioned off for hospital employees only, One of our residents won tickets to the series-clinching game 6 of the 2013 world series at Fenway Park behind home plate!

Nearby Attractions

The are multiple opportunities to get outside of the hustle of the city: many residents will get away with a long weekend on the Cape, go up to the White Mountains in New Hampshire, or head to Maine for lobster rolls and breathtaking hiking. Providence, RI is only a 1 hour drive away; New York City is 3-4 hours.
