Botswana Resident Elective and Fellowship
The Botswana Global Health Program offers an exciting resident elective and fellowship opportunity for those interested in a unique global health learning experience. It was launched in 2011 in partnership with Scottish Livingstone Hospital (SLH) and the Botswana Ministry of Health in Molepolole, Botswana, and the Botswana-Harvard Partnership.
The program became the primary global health training initiative within the internal medicine residency program. Since then, BIDMC Department of Medicine has maintained a permanent faculty presence at SLH. Dr. Jon Crocker directs the program in Boston, while Dr. Tomer Barak serves as current country director in Botswana and oversees clinical, medical education and quality improvement partnerships at SLH.
In 2013, Oregon Health and Science University formally entered the partnership, and since then, BIDMC's Departments of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Anesthesia have joined the program, sending faculty to work at SLH full-time. The global health elective at SLH offers inpatient and outpatient clinical/educational opportunities, and integrates U.S. residents into ward teams comprised of Botswana medical students and interns, U.S. residents, and SLH medical officers and nursing staff.
