Outside of work you’ll find me running, pelotoning, watching sports or hanging with friends/family.
*Why did you choose BIDMC? From meeting the residents and faculty, I could tell there was a strong emphasis on creating a supportive culture. Since joining the community, I have been amazed by how down-to-earth, welcoming, and cool everyone is. I also really liked the diversity of clinical sites, the flexibility of the 3+1 curriculum, and living in Boston (which has become my 2nd home).

Fun Facts/Interesting past life: I have lived in Virginia my entire life, so moving to Boston is my first time living in a new state.
*Why did you choose BIDMC? When I was researching programs, BI was everything I wanted and hoped for and more. Specifically, they have a well developed, robust, and respected residency with a strong track record for creating strong Emergency Medicine physicians, but I also loved the culture. One thing that was very important to me was to go to a residency that was like a family, where I would feel happy to come to work and see my co-workers and friends. Lastly, having a program that encouraged me to explore my many interests and supporting/mentoring me once I found my niche. All of these points and more are the reasons I chose BIDMC.
*What are you most excited about to experience in Boston? I'm excited to experience city life, coming from Virginia this is a big change for me in the best way. I am excited to go to my first Red Sox game, as well as experience my first New England Fall.

Awards/Positions in Medical School: Medical Education Representation Committee Member, Group Leader for Inside Medicine high school pipeline program, unofficial position of bass guitarist for my med school funk/soul band
Fun Facts/Interesting past life: Life long New Englander. Medical background includes working as an EMT and ER tech. My favorite non-medical job was the 8 summers I worked as a golf course groundskeeper in high school and college, but I have also worked as a bartender/waiter, worked the front desk at my cousin’s gym, and one time helped my brother sell corn out of a pickup truck on the side of the road in New Hampshire.
*Why did you choose BIDMC? Going to residency close to my family and friends was a huge priority for me from the start, but I thought BIDMC really stood out on interview day. Despite being over Zoom, I could really tell the program leadership and residents were kind, fun and down-to-earth people who were really invested in making sure their residents got an amazing, well-rounded education. As someone interested in fellowship and academic emergency medicine, I felt that BIDMC was one of the best academic 3-year EM programs at a large tertiary care hospital that still has plenty of rotations at community hospitals, so you get to experience the full spectrum of emergency medicine while having ample access for exploring niche interests.
*What are you most excited about to experience in Boston? Having the opportunity to work in the medical tent at Red Sox games and concerts at Fenway.
Gabriel Erion Barner, MD, PhD

Fun Facts/Interesting past life: I grew up in South Dakota and spent undergrad in the Boston area at Harvard. While there I trained as an EMT in CrimsonEMS and worked for Fallon Ambulance Service transporting patients all over the city. While doing my MD-PhD in Seattle I spent my free time playing jazz music, ultramarathon running, and making candies like caramels and marshmallows and mailing them around the world to friends and family.
*Why did you choose BIDMC? BI stood out in so many ways when I was applying: a three-year academic program that lets you choose whether to do a 4th year as an attending; a perfect mix of high-acuity tertiary care medicine, community EM, and research resources in my field of interest (informatics & machine learning); and an incredible city. Now that I’m here, those things are all true, but I’ve been most impressed by the residents and attendings here, who are simultaneously shockingly brilliant, and incredibly kind and genuine.
*What are you most excited about to experience in Boston? Trail running in Middlesex Fells and Blue Hills, backpacking in the White Mountains, biking in the Emerald Necklace, bringing homemade candy to shift (and trying my co-residents’ amazing baked goods.)

*Why did you choose BIDMC? I got such a warm feeling from everyone that I met who was involved with the program. They were so welcoming, interested in what brought me to EM, and excited to tell me how this program would be able to help me meet my goals within the specialty. The number of clinical sites gives you really broad-based experience that allows you to practice in any setting after residency. The optional but guaranteed job after the three years was a big factor as well. And to top it all off, Boston is a great city.
*What are you most excited about to experience in Boston? I'm excited to work Red Sox games, though I know nothing about baseball. I previously lived in Rhode Island, and it's nice to be in a bigger city where it seems like there is always something happening: there's always a concert or play, so many great restaurants to try, and varied and exciting neighborhoods to explore.

I’ve hosted trivia nights with friends and peers for years, yet am terrible at answering trivia questions myself. And I love playing sports, from basketball to volleyball to squash; I’m down to play them all.
*Why did you choose BIDMC? It really is the whole package of an EM residency. The acuity is next to none. The breadth, from academic to community to pediatric, covers the span of emergency medicine. The research is top notch. But most of all, the people made this community feel like a family from the moment I met them, and that was all I could hope for in a residency.
*What are you most excited about to experience in Boston? Exploring. From symphony hall to many bike paths and trails in the surrounding area, I’m looking forward to discovering all the city has to offer.

Having done my away here I saw first hand the caliber of training at BI and decided that for the training alone it was worth staying on the east coast. This program offers a wide range of clinical sites to prepare you to work in any setting you choose. It has a 3 + 1 structure which gives you a lot of flexibility in deciding how you want to shape your career - you can finish in three or, with the guidance of our faculty, create a fellowship that meets your goals. On top of this, on or off shift, our residents and attendings are folks you look forward to being around.

The clinical training is also outstanding, and I know having the balance of training at both community and academic hospitals will shape me into a skillful and well-rounded physician. Lastly, I was drawn to the 3+1 structure which offers a unique avenue for me to explore my interests within Emergency Medicine.

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Long Island native but went to University of Florida for undergrad (go gata!). I went reverse bungee jumping in Peru. I enjoy anything that involves water and sun. I’m oddly proficient at building Ikea furniture and baking anything that comes in a box.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BIDMC because of its robust clinical training, vast community exposure, leadership development and unmatched faculty support. The residents I met during my interview day were all down-to-earth yet incredibly talented and hardworking. Also, Boston is a dream city. The choice was a no-brainer for me.

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am a former whitewater rafting guide and met my amazing wife while she was a backpacking guide in Colorado. Together we paddle big rivers, climb tall rocks, and run pretty trails as often as we can. I’m also a Spikeball Ambassador and host tournaments on the regular. My wife and I spent a month rafting the Grand Canyon with 14 of our friends, the car was packed and we drove to Arizona directly from our Match Day ceremony M4.
Why did you choose BIDMC? Top tier clinical training combined with unbelievable opportunities to pursue Emergency Medicine adjacent interests. The people are so happy, smart, and fun. We had never been to the Northeast but Boston seems like a great city and we are excited to explore all that this part of the country has to offer.

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I started sailing when I was seven years old and taught sailing for ten years on the Cape. I also sailed competitively in college and still try to get out on the water as much as I can. When I’m not in the ED, you’ll probably find me on the Cape with my husband Tim, our golden retriever, and our families.
Why did you choose BIDMC? I loved my interview day at BIDMC, and I could tell that each person I met was very down to earth, but also a top-notch clinician with unique clinical interests. I was drawn to the diverse training environments, the 3+1 program, the world-class teaching, and the multitude of opportunities to explore my own interests within EM. I loved being in Boston for medical school and was thrilled to have matched at BI!

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Before medical school I worked in a lab that studies prion disease, as an EMT, and as a barista. I also lived in Quito, Ecuador for a time. In the future, I look forward to becoming the best doctor I can and getting a puppy with my significant other!
Why did you choose BIDMC? It was very important to me to choose a program where I would be able to care for a diverse patient population with a wide array of clinical pathologies and needs. I also wished to find a program that would push me out of my comfort zone and challenge me to grow as a human being. BIDMC is a program that does both of these things very well and also provides world class clinical training in a 3+1 academic format.
Jani Swiatek, MD
Medical School: Lewis Katz School of Medicine (Temple University)
Professional Interests: Health Advocacy/Community Outreach, Critical Care, Medical Education
Awards/Positions in Medical School/Residency: Student-run clinic founder/director, AOA, Service/Relief trip coordinator (Puerto Rico)
Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: Before starting medical school, I worked for a year with AmeriCorps in Boston in a Certified Nursing Assistant training program with adult students from all over the world. I loved meeting them, learning about their cultures, and helping them prepare for their CNA exams! In my free time I love playing basketball and tennis, traveling, doing my own clothing alterations, and baking!
Why did you choose BIDMC? I chose BI because I felt like the program had everything that I wanted—a variety of clinical sites, high volume/high acuity, faculty dedicated to teaching, super happy and fun residents, and it is in Boston (my absolute favorite city). I also loved that I would get exposed to accomplished mentors with a variety of interests to help me narrow down my list of things that I might want to pursue for fellowships.
Kat Tang, MD

Fun Facts/ Interesting past life: I am a former college soccer goalkeeper (and was the shortest goalkeeper in my league) and avid Liverpool FC supporter ever since training at their facilities during my teen years. I have worked as an EMT for 6 years in both the greater Boston area and upstate New York. I started doing yoga while in medical school and absolutely love it, despite being the least flexible person in every class. As a child, I grew up with 7 cats and 3 dogs, so I like to think I can get along well with both cat and dog people!
Why did you choose BIDMC? Even though it was over Zoom, I left my interview day with warm fuzzy feelings after talking to all the impressive and kind faculty. I especially found the flexible 3+1 program unique and indicative that the program works hard to make sure the professional needs of each resident are addressed throughout their training. It also helps that my husband’s current job is based in Boston, and it is one of our favorite cities in the US.
