Our Resident Didactic Series is predominantly provided by faculty or guest speakers with expertise in the topic area. Residents are often invited to teach with faculty mentorship as part of our "Resident as Teacher" experience. Many lectures are recorded and made available to residents the following day. The didactic series covers topics in clinical anesthesia, anesthesia practice management and board preparation.
Didactics in Clinical Anesthesia topics provide essential information on the fundamentals of anesthesia and perioperative management. CA-1 residents attend sessions with focus on basic anesthesia topics while CA-2 and CA-3 residents participate in case-based subspecialty seminars and discussions.
|Anesthesia Practice Management
Dr. Peter Panzica, Vice Chair for Clinical Anesthesia, leads a didactic series dedicated to the important concepts of anesthesia practice management. Experts in areas such as billing and anesthesia finance, medicolegal issues and the organization of anesthesia practices are invited to speak to our trainees.
Each CA-3 resident spends a dedicated week as the OR manager at BIDMC or at our community practice location at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham to gain experience in comprehensive perioperative management. Their duties include managing the OR as the floor runner, working with the perioperative nursing team and surgeons to schedule cases, dealing with emergencies that require anesthesia care and supervising CRNAs and/or PACU residents.
Didactics in February (prior to the in-service exam) and June are designated as board preparation blocks. Past board questions are grouped by topic area and reviewed with residents in discussion sessions facilitated by faculty. High yield topics such as statistics and Ph/Alpha Stat management and test-taking strategies are also covered. There are also monthly sessions such as resident-led Keywords and Mock Oral Exam practices.
