Pete Healy, President of BIDMC, shares his top milestones of the year

Our dedicated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center physicians, nurses, and staff receive countless honors. Our talented scientists conduct endless studies that move the field of medicine forward. But even beyond those wonderful achievements that you read about in the news, on our website, or our Facebook page, we have accomplished so much in 2019. Together, we have advanced patient care, we have propelled research, and we have enhanced the well-being of our community.

Here are just a few highlights from 2019 that make me humbled and proud to be part of the remarkable BIDMC community. Whether you are an employee, a donor, a grateful patient, a clinician, or an administrator, you inspire me every day. Happy New Year, and I look forward to what 2020 brings!

We Joined Beth Israel Lahey Health

In March, BIDMC proudly joined the Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH) system and became a dedicated partner in a health care organization committed to make a difference in people's lives across Eastern Massachusetts. BILH includes 13 hospitals, 4,300 physicians, 9,000 nurses, and nearly 35,000 employees. Today, 75 percent of eastern Massachusetts residents have a BILH primary care physician within five miles of their home!

"I've long believed that health care is a fundamental human right and that something different is needed in health care. Many of us at Beth Israel Lahey Health have been dreaming of being able to do more. I know we can and we will." – Kevin Tabb, MD, President and CEO, BILH

We Broke Ground

We launched construction for BIDMC's incredible new inpatient building in June with a special groundbreaking celebration. The building — which will be the medical center's first in more than 20 years — will have hybrid operating suites, a leading-edge intensive care unit, a beautifully designed outdoor healing garden, and more than 150 private, family-friendly patient rooms. I am thrilled that this building will make our environment commensurate with the extraordinary care we provide!

We Were Nationally Ranked by U.S. News & World Report

In its 2019–20 rankings, U.S. News & World Report recognized BIDMC as a national leader in five specialty areas — up from just two last year! BIDMC was nationally ranked in cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, and gynecology. BIDMC also received national recognition in neurology and nephrology.

"I am extremely proud of the extraordinary and compassionate care we provide each and every day at BIDMC. These national rankings reflect this excellence, which exists across a wide range of specialties within our medical center." – Anthony Weiss, MD, MBA, MSc, Chief Medical Officer, BIDMC

We Welcomed Gyongyi Szabo, MD, PhD, Hon. ScD

BIDMC is elevating its academic mission through phenomenal new research and educational efforts every day. This year, our academic enterprise gained new leadership when we named Gyongyi Szabo, MD, PhD, Hon. ScD, as our new Chief Academic Officer to support a broad range of basic, translational, and clinical research priorities, along with oversight of our training and education mission. Welcome, Dr. Szabo!

We Launched a New Addiction Outpatient Clinic

This year, BIDMC celebrated the opening of a new outpatient addiction clinic, enabling us to help even more patients and their families battling addiction.

"Almost everyone knows someone suffering from addiction. Many times, addiction is one of the many serious health issues patients are facing. We are thrilled to offer comprehensive care in a supportive environment on their journey to recovery." – Kevin Hill, MD, MHS, Director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry, BIDMC.

We Opened Our Very Own Pharmacy

BIDMC expanded its pharmacy service line and extended our commitment to deliver affordable medications. The BIDMC Pharmacy is the first-of-its-kind at the medical center, providing accessible, convenient service to patients and staff alike. Come visit the BIDMC Pharmacy in the Shapiro lobby!

We Launched Care in One Click

For patients with non-life-threatening urgent medical conditions, care is now a click away! BIDMC OnDemand is a new virtual urgent care service that offers Massachusetts patients timely and easy access to BIDMC emergency medicine physicians through a computer or mobile app.

"This exciting virtual care service provides greater and more convenient access to health care. We hope to study its effect on emergency department and urgent care wait times and patient satisfaction so we can further strengthen our services." – Oren Mechanic, MD, MPH, Director of Telehealth, BIDMC

We Were Designated an "LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader"

BIDMC has been recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for the 9th year in a row as an "LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader." The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of America's largest civil rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBTQ people. This award is particularly meaningful to me as a BIDMC leader who strives to uphold our culture of respect, dignity, equity, and non-discrimination every day.

We Were Honored by the Red Sox
