Registered Dietitian Emily Samuels joined the Weight Loss Surgery team at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in September 2018. Emily, also known as ‘Emma,’ is a bariatric clinical Registered Dietitian. She offers nutritional guidance to bariatric patients helping them to establish healthy food plans to fit individual lifestyles following weight loss surgery.

Emma earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology and French at Union College in upstate New York. After working in marketing for a few years, Emma returned to school earning a Master’s of Science in Nutrition and Health Promotion from Simmons College.

She completed her dietetic internship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in 2008.

Previous to working in the BIDMC Weight Loss Surgery Center, Emma’s work focused on geriatric nutrition and interfaith women's weight loss support groups. She also established a private nutritional counseling practice.

Emma says that she has always had a passion to work in the weight loss field and bariatric community.

“I feel fortunate to work in a profession where I can help people during vulnerable and pivotal moments in their life,” says Emma. “For some folks, weight loss can be a complicated, long journey that is deeply painful and frustrating.”

Emma revels in helping patients modify eating behaviors so that it is a less daunting daily task.

“Breaking steps down to achievable goals and providing maximum support can make all the difference in a person’s journey towards success,” says Emma.

One can easily recognize Emma’s excitement in helping patients transition into healthier versions of themselves.

“The benefits of patients making healthy lifestyle changes and reclaiming their health are enormous, and it's a privilege to see,” Emma said. “Patients need to know that I believe in them. I also know that they will make mistakes along the way, but I won't give up on them, and nor should they on themselves.”

Outside of work, Emma is busy with her boys, ages 14, 12 and 9. "We try to stay very active as a family. We have push-up competitions in my house and for now, I can still beat my boys," says Emma.

Emma’s favorite hobbies are playing tennis, hiking and reading. She especially enjoys traveling and various fun-filled activities with her three boys, family and friends.

Emma stays healthy and fit by exercising and cooking healthy. Her favorite exercise is Baptiste (heated power vinyasa) Yoga.
