Sexual satisfaction is an integral aspect of quality of life and happiness in relationships. Sexual concerns are common, with over 40 percent of women reporting a sexual problem across the lifespan. 


At the Center for Women's Sexual Health, we work with you individually, and, when appropriate, with your partner, to provide sensitive and discreet evaluation and treatment for a broad spectrum of sexual concerns. Our team includes including physicians, nurse practitioners and mental health specialists.

Physiological Problems

Common Sexual Problems

Sexual problems in women are especially common during major life transitions or illness including:

  • During pregnancy, after childbirth, while breastfeeding, during menopause and post menopause
  • After treatment for cancer - especially breast, ovarian and uterine cancer
  • After pelvic trauma or surgery - including childbirth injury and hysterectomy
  • Neurological impairment due to illness (multiple sclerosis) or trauma (spinal cord injury)
  • Vascular problems - often associated with diabetes and heart disease
  • Mental health problems - including depression and anxiety
  • Numerous medications - including oral contraceptives and antidepressants

About Our Sexual Health Services

At the Center for Women's Sexual Health, we offer:

  • Comprehensive medical and psychological evaluation
  • Diagnostic testing such as blood tests, sensation and blood flow testing
  • Mental health counseling for individuals, couples and groups
  • Guided referral to specialists such as physical therapists and sex therapists, as needed

In addition to providing comprehensive care for women, the center maintains close affiliations with experts at BIDMC and the Joslin Clinic who provide evaluation and treatment for male partners who are experiencing sexual problems.
