Orientation and Transition to Practice Programs
At BIDMC, we invest in our teams. We commit to helping each staff member advance their career by offering a variety of residencies and related programs for new hires.
At your core orientation, you’ll learn about our structure and systems as well as meet our Chief Nursing Officer. Depending on your experience or specialty interests, you’ll participate in one of several onboarding programs.
New Graduate Nurse Residency – General Units & Critical Care
- You will be enrolled in a structured, evidence-based program designed by Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to support your transition to the role of a professional registered nurse.
- The 12-month curriculum includes monthly seminars, hands-on clinical practice, didactic presentations and opportunities for reflection and peer support.
- Residency opportunities are available in general medicine/surgery, cardiology, solid organ transplant, hematology/oncology, critical care, perinatal care, neuroscience and ambulatory nursing.
- You’ll also attend a 1:1 clinical orientation with a dedicated preceptor, focused on clinical competencies and skills.
- In critical care, you’ll receive additional support for completion of the Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (ECCO) program through the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

New Graduates – Emergency Nursing
- You will be enrolled in a structured, evidence-based program designed by Vizient and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to support your transition to the role of a professional registered nurse.
- The 12-month curriculum includes monthly seminars, hands-on clinical experiences, didactic presentations and opportunities for reflection and peer support.
- You’ll participate in weekly four-hour seminar/classroom sessions with the emergency department unit educator/nurse specialist for skills development, case presentations and more. Plus, you’ll hear directly from members of our patient-family advisory council about their experiences.
- On your unit, you’ll attend a 12-week 1:1 general orientation with a preceptor, followed by four weeks of protected time for additional training in emergency department practice.
- After a year, you’ll attend an 8-week orientation to critical care emergency practice.
- You’ll also participate in Emergency Nursing Orientation 3.0, an evidence-based online orientation designed by the Emergency Nurses Association and Elsevier.

Perioperative Professional Nurse Entry Program
- Through our Perioperative Professional Nurse Entry Program (PNEP), we provide 6-9 months of training for nurses new to perioperative nursing.
- We incorporate the Periop 101 core curriculum outlined by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses.
- The curriculum consists of didactic sessions, simulation training, hands-on experience and more.
- We accept two cohorts per year, typically during spring and fall.
- New graduates with a BSN as well as experienced RNs (any degree preparation) are encouraged to apply.

Experienced Nurses
- We encourage experienced nurses to come find out what makes nursing at BIDMC unique.
- Our nurses who have worked in other systems tell us there is something special about BIDMC. We think that’s why so many nurses choose to stay — we currently have more than 400 nurses who have been with us for 20 years or more.
- As a new team member, you’ll participate in a two-day system orientation where you’ll have the opportunity to meet our chief nursing officer.
- From there, you’ll work for up to 12 weeks with a dedicated preceptor on your unit. Plus, you’ll be able to access unit educators for ongoing support.
- For those who are looking to transition to a new specialty, we can help. We offer specialized, evidence-based onboarding programs for experienced nurses looking to transfer to critical care, emergency and perioperative nursing.

Perioperative LPN Program
- Our Perioperative LPN Program invites LPNs to BIDMC to train in perioperative nursing roles.
- Upon completion of the 4-6 month program, LPNs will function in the scrub nurse and circulating assist nurse roles in our operating rooms as well as on our labor and delivery unit.

Associate Degree Pipeline Program: Our Partnership with Emmanuel College
- New graduate associate degree nurses may enroll in our pipeline program with Emmanuel College.
- During designated application periods, nurses who have recently earned their associates degree may apply to join our team as part of a specialized program that leads to a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Emmanuel College.
- Participants enroll in a 36-hour position, with 32 hours dedicated to clinical practice and four hours to professional/academic advancement.
- As a participant, you’ll attend all expenses paid evening classes at Emmanuel with a two-year degree completion date.
- As a new graduate nurse, you’ll also be enrolled in our New Graduate Nurse Residency Program.
