Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program FAQs

There are two PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy residents. Other BIDMC pharmacy residency programs include 4 PGY1 residents, two PGY2 Infectious Diseases/ Antimicrobial Stewardship residents, one PGY2 Solid Organ Transplant resident, and one PGY2 Ambulatory Care resident.

No. While attendance at the meeting provides a direct opportunity to meet and discuss our program, we recognize that not everyone is able to attend. Selections for interviews will be based on our review of the submitted applications through PhORCAS.

Completed applications will be reviewed by members of the Residency Advisory Committee to determine candidates that most closely match the BIDMC program goals and opportunities. Your letter of intent, CV, scholastic record and letters of recommendation weigh heavily in the review process. We also consider work experience, career goals, leadership activities, teaching experience and involvement in professional activities as important factors in our selection process.

The interview process entails a full day (8:00 am - 4:00 pm) of meetings with the Residency Director, clinical preceptors, administrative staff and the current residents. Each applicant will be asked to present a 15 minute clinical case during the interview day.

The salary for the 2024-2025 PGY2 Residency Program is $55,000.

Residents will staff every third weekend and up to two major holiday(s) depending on the needs of the pharmacy department. This will include both day and evening shifts to provide the resident with a broad experience of pharmacy practices in the critical care setting.

Residents must be licensed at the start of the residency or eligible for licensure (reciprocity or examination) on initiation of the program and licensed in Massachusetts within 90 days from the start of the residency.

Each resident will attend a general hospital orientation, followed by a general orientation and training program within the central pharmacy. This training will prepare the resident for the service component of the residency as well as provide insight into the operational workflow and policies and procedures of the pharmacy and medical center. Orientation to MCPHS University (school of pharmacy) will be coordinated during this time.

Required "core" rotations provide the resident a broad experience in the provision of care to the hospitalized patient. A range of elective rotations allows the residents to customize their program to match their interests. Flexibility within the program allows residents to select elective rotations to maximize their exposure to their areas of interest. Active participation by the residents in designing their program is encouraged.

BIDMC’s affiliation with MCPHS University provides the resident with a number of teaching opportunities. The resident will facilitate therapeutic seminars/patient case discussions at MCPHS University. Didactic teaching opportunities, additional preceptor activities and departmental in-services all serve to enhance the teaching skills of the resident.

The graduates of the PGY2 Critical Care Residency program have accepted Clinical Pharmacist positions at academic medical centers including BIDMC.
