Dr. Mukamal’s primary research interests are investigating the role of dietary and lifestyle factors – particularly alcohol consumption – on the incidence and prognosis of cardiovascular and neurovascular disease and its risk factors. As a general internist and clinical investigator, his research has incorporated ongoing epidemiological studies, utilized hospital-based clinical data, and interventional studies. The outcomes of this research have been broad-based and include diverse health effects of alcohol ranging from novel cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical vascular disease to falls and suicide, along with studies of biochemical, genetic, and other physiological determinants of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. His most recent projects include characterization of the role of free fatty acid species in cardiometabolic disease in older adults and an international trial of moderate alcohol consumption in prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Current Research Support

NIH/Common Fund, 2014-2019
Racial and Ethnic Diversity in Human Extracellular RNA
This multiple PI project, part of the ExRNA Communication Program, aims to define the expression of circulating extracellular RNAs in healthy adults from the MESA and Framingham Heart Study cohorts.

NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2015-2019
Dietary Etiologies of Heart Disease and Cancer
Novel Lipoprotein particles, Brain Abnormalities, and Risk of Dementia and Stroke This project evaluates novel HDL subspecies defined on the basis of apolipoproteins and their associations with risk of dementia and stroke.

NIH/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, 2016-2020
Dietary Etiologies of Heart Disease and Cancer
This project evaluates dietary etiologies and pathways that influence risk of coronary heart disease.

NIH/National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2016-2021
Moderate Alcohol and Cardiovascular Health Trial
This project seeks to determine the effect of daily consumption of ~15 grams of alcohol on risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
