Membership in multiple on-line journal services and medical information is provided through BIDMC and HMS for all residents.

Professional Expenses

Resident are given an annual $500.00 professional expense allowance, which may be used for textbooks and educational materials.

Research Project Funding

Funding is available from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Research Foundation for costs associated with resident research projects. Funds are approved on a case-by-case basis by a formal review process. A department epidemiologist is available to assist with study design and statistical analysis.

Educational Conferences and Meetings

Residents may attend conferences at which they have had presentations, posters and abstracts accepted. Travel costs will be covered by the department with prior approval.

The department sponsors the PGY 3 class to attend the national CREOG Leadership Conference at the end of the third year, to help prepare them as leaders in the chief year.

The department also sponsors all chief residents to attend a board review course, as well as the cost of registration for the written ABOG examination.

Harvard Medical School Conferences

All post-graduate and professional conferences sponsored by HMS, regardless of sponsoring medical center, may be attended free of cost by BIDMC residents.

Contract and Policies

The BIDMC provides each trainee with an annual contract. This is signed by both the trainee and the program. This is a standard contract and describes briefly the terms and conditions of their appointment, what the trainee can expect from the institution and the expectations by the institution for the trainee.

Resident Book Club

A monthly book club is held at the home of one of the faculty members, during which a chosen book, typically focused on the humanitarian side of medicine is discussed.

First Thursday

The department sponsors a night out for the residents to socialize on the first Thursday of each rotational block.

Night Team Breakfast

Since the night team cannot attend First Thursday, the department treats them to a breakfast out at the end of their rotation.
