The first eighteen months of the fellowship will be spent conducting basic science research. Objectives for fellows during this section of their training are to develop basic skill in laboratory research, and to develop an area of research that will allow the completion of the board required thesis and provided a direction for an academic research career.

Objectives for the last six months of the fellowship are to complete data collection that will allow for preparation of a basic science proposal. Alternatively, a fellow may become more involved in a clinical/outcomes oriented research and spend the last six months collating data and writing a clinical proposal

Specific objectives for the first 18 months of the fellowship are to introduce the fellow to both clinical and research laboratories, to develop a research proposal, and to complete a major portion of that bench research. The Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility has fully equipped molecular laboratories. Clinical faculty performs basic science research in these laboratories. Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has major research buildings staffed with Harvard Medical School investigators. The Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Molecular laboratory is housed within Research North, one of these facilities. Collaborative efforts for the fellow are enormous.

A four-week orientation period will begin the fellowship program. During that time, the fellows are introduced to the basic science laboratory and will explore potential areas of research interest. Any collaborative relationships necessary to meet a fellow's specific area of interest will be established.

During the research block, the fellow will spend 2 hours per week in the ART ultrasound facility learning basic ultrasound skills to enable the fellow to develop competency in follicle/ovulation monitoring, basic gynecologic ultrasound and first trimester obstetric ultrasound. Only one half-day a week will be spent in clinical work during the first eighteen month research block. This will entail an outpatient clinical session where the patient mix will approximate 40% endocrine and reproductive loss problems and 60% fertility problems.

Specific objectives for the last six month block will be to complete the research thesis with submission of manuscript(s) for publication and to continue to gather data to support an NIH or equivalent (e.g. RSDP) proposal. Alternatively, the fellow who may become involved in clinical/outcomes oriented research will continue to pursue this area of study. Fifty percent of the last block will be protected for basic science or clinical research.

During the research portions of the fellowship training, the fellow will take the graduate level courses required: one basic science course in an area pertinent to the research thesis and a graduate level statistics course. Additional course will be allowed, but are optional.
