We offer various opportunities to learn ultrasound procedures in our echocardiography simulation lab, including those listed in the table below. Our lab is one of the most robust and prolific in the world. Led by Drs. Robina Matyal and Feroze Mahmood, these simulation sessions and courses use the following:

  • Live lectures
  • Online modules
  • Apple iBooks (Cupertino, CA)
  • Case discussions
  • Observation in the OR
  • Simulation on models and high-fidelity echocardiography simulators
  • Interactive workshops

Courses in ultrasound, transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) are also held for other departments, including cardiology, surgery and emergency medicine.

Type Topic Learners Description
Course Basic Ultrasound Interns Our interns participate in a 13-day basic ultrasound course to learn about “knobology”, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia and vascular access, lung ultrasound, ultrasound in shock and echocardiography.
Workshop Introduction to Ultrasound CA-1 Residents Each CA-1 resident attends an introductory workshop on ultrasound during the first month as a resident.
Didactic Sessions Ultrasound Residents Throughout the year, residents attend simulation sessions to gain in-depth knowledge and skills on the different ultrasound modalities.
Course TTE Critical Care Fellows Early in the fellowship year, our Critical Care fellows participate in a one-month course on TTE.
Course TEE Critical Care Fellows Following the TTE course, our Critical Care fellows participate in a one-month course on TEE.

Anesthesia, Critical Care, and Pain MedicineAny fellow, resident or intern who wants additional practice on the simulators in our echocardiography lab is welcomed to schedule an appointment with Dr. Robina Matyal or one of our research fellows at any time.
