2019 Critical VoicesOn May 1, the Board of Overseers hosted BIDMC’s annual Critical Voices event at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. Co-chaired by Alexandra and Jody Simes, the evening highlighted ultraprecision medicine, the BIDMC Cancer Center’s revolutionary approach to individualized cancer care. 

Pier Paolo Pandolfi, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Cancer Center and the Cancer Research Institute, opened the evening by introducing ultraprecision medicine. WCVB-TV Channel 5 sports anchor and reporter Bob Halloran moderated a panel of physician–researchers and grateful patients. As part of the panel, David Avigan, M.D., David McDermott, M.D., and Jacalyn Rosenblatt, M.D., discussed their work in immunotherapy. Grateful patients Marlene Colerico, Peter Kitsakos, and Randi Schwartz shared their stories, recounting the lifesaving care they each received at BIDMC—with Schwartz highlighting her family’s decision to give $1.5 million in support of Dr. Aviagn’s research.

Featured speakers from the evening also included BIDMC President Peter J. Healy and Beth Israel Lahey Health President and CEO Kevin Tabb, M.D., who discussed the new Beth Israel Lahey Health system’s role in delivering ultraprecision medicine to patients with cancer across eastern Massachusetts and beyond. Board of Overseers Chair Matthew Consigli closed the evening.
