Kamal Khabbaz, M.D., is utilizing the latest 3D printing technology to improve patient care
Kamal Khabbaz, M.D., is chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery within the Roberta and Stephen R. Weiner Department of Surgery at BIDMC. Under his leadership over the last decade, cardiac surgeries at BIDMC have nearly doubled to 1,100 per year, and the division has achieved and surpassed national benchmarks for success. Khabbaz has instilled a culture of collaboration and compassion among his team and overseen the improvement of spaces, such as a renovated patient floor and the new hybrid operating room to improve the patient experience. In addition to his surgical work, Dr. Khabbaz is involved in clinical research that focuses on studying outcomes of different types of heart surgeries, such as mitral valve repair, to find ways to improve current techniques and procedures. In addition to revolutionizing treatment, his current investigations into 3D printing technologies will enhance potential training opportunities for future surgeons and open doors to improve patient education and joint decision making.
