At BIDMC, "Ethics is Everyone"

BIDMC doctor comforting a patientAt Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, we firmly believe that ethics can never be separated from the daily care of our patients. Ethics became a formally recognized core value of our institution under the leadership of former President of Beth Israel Hospital and current BIDMC Trustee, Mitchell Rabkin, MD. The Hung and Jill Cheng Tsui Ethics Program was established to support our providers, patients and families in this effort.

Mission of the Hung and Jill Cheng Tsui Ethics Program

To promote a culture in which all BIDMC staff appreciate the importance of the interplay between ethical aspects of their work, their decisions, actions, character and morale, and have the support they need to do that work in accordance with BIDMC's and their own highest moral standards.

Ethics Education

We offer several opportunities for our staff and clinicians to learn about clinical ethics in their patient care.

  • We organize Ethics Case Conferences which include BIDMC-wide audiences and regularly schedule Ethics Rounds that are informal discussions for staff to reflect on current or recent situations.
  • For BIDMC residents in training, we have the Swan Ginsburg Program in Humanism to humanistic qualities.
  • Talk Turkey: An Advance Directive Campaign is an initiative promoted during the Thanksgiving holiday to encourage patients to pick a healthcare proxy.

Ethics Advisory Committee

Ethics Advisory Committee (EAC) was established in 2003 and includes representatives from diverse clinical and administrative departments throughout the medical center.

The committee meets monthly to review consultative and educational activities of ESS and address any policy and systems issues identified through its activities. The Committee also oversees activities and involvement of the BIDMC-wide network of Ethics Liaison.
