Personality Disorders

Personality disorders refer to a group of illnesses; common to all of them is a long-term pattern of thoughts and behavior that is pervasive, inflexible, and differs significantly from what is expected in that person’s culture.

Overview and Symptoms

A personality disorder causes trouble perceiving and relating to situations and other people. It often leads to problems in relationships, social activities, work and school. As a result, people with personality disorders can significantly disrupt the lives of those who care about them.

Treatment

One challenge is that the person with the disorder may not recognize that his/her thinking may be out of the norm. Often times, (s)he believes others are to blame for their challenges. A skilled mental health professional is required to diagnose and treat someone with personality disorder.
