Weight Loss Surgery Programs and Services
We offer three types of weight loss surgical procedures at the BIDMC Weight Loss Surgery program. Our team will discuss all options with you to be sure you choose the one that is best for your health and lifestyle. The procedures include:
Gastric bypass
In the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, the most common weight loss surgical procedure, a small pouch is created from the stomach. The volume of food the pouch can hold is much smaller than the original stomach, thus allowing weight loss to occur.

LAP-BAND®
Surgeons place an adjustable band around the upper portion of the stomach in a LAP-BAND procedure. This upper pouch allows patients to eat small amounts of food at a time.

Gastric sleeve
During sleeve gastrectomy, surgeons remove about 60% of the stomach. Weight loss occurs because the remaining size of the stomach restricts the amount of food that a person can eat.

Robotic Hernia Repair
Robots can sometimes make laparoscopic surgery easier. Our surgeons may offer robotic surgery for hernias of the groin and abdominal wall.
Excess Skin Removal after Weight Loss Surgery
Removal of skin after bariatric surgery is more than cosmetic surgery, it can help restore overall health. As a General Surgeon, Dr. Jones addresses abdominal wall skin (panniculectomy, abdominoplasty) at time of abdominal wall hernias.
For all types of weight loss surgery, BIDMC is using the latest science to make recovery easier. We reduce the need for narcotics after surgery by using different types of pain medications and nerve blocks. This means patients are more awake immediately after the procedure, are in less pain and often get to go home the next day.
