The Psychiatric Inpatient Unit provides state-of-the-art psychiatric assessment and compassionate, evidence-based treatment. As a service of the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical School at BIDMC, we are also committed to the education of professionals-in-training from multiple disciplines, and to the advancement of psychiatric research and practice.
Our multidisciplinary clinical teams work closely with all patients to design and implement care plans that meet the unique needs of each patient. Our staff is committed to a respectful, collaborative treatment relationship to ensure that you receive individualized care and multi-faceted treatment guided by established best practices. Through individual and group treatment, close family collaboration and comprehensive discharge planning, we assist in your recovery and safe return to your home and family as quickly as possible.
Patients in need of acute inpatient level of psychiatric care are those who present a danger to themselves or others or are unable to care for themselves due to mental illness. Our patients may include:
- those with medical comorbidity who are in need of intensive psychiatric treatment but not in need of medical admission
- those whose symptoms have recently worsened
- those with a first onset of symptoms
- students from local colleges and universities in acute crisis
- ECT patients
