Antepartum Staff at BIDMC


BIDMC OB/GYN resident Rui Wang, MD reviews a patient's information.The antepartum unit at BIDMC is a family-centered floor with specially trained healthcare professionals who work as a team to provide the best care and support for you and your growing family.

This team consists of:

  • Obstetricians/gynecologists who specialize in caring for pregnant women during pregnancy, labor and the postpartum period. Your obstetrician is the person primarily responsible for managing your care while coordinating a team of other specialists.
  • Obstetrics/gynecology residents (physicians in training) who work with the team to preform evaluations and execute care plans under the guidance of an obstetrician.
  • Maternal-fetal medicine specialists who have completed training in high-risk pregnancies and manage medical complications of pregnancy, emergency obstetric care, genetics and more.
  • Maternal-fetal medicine fellows (specialists in training) who work under the supervision of the maternal-fetal medicine specialists to manage complications during pregnancy.
  • Neonatologists are pediatricians who specialize in caring for newborn infants. A neonatologist is available in the hospital 24/7 and cares for newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Neonatologists at BIDMC are also part of the Division of Newborn Medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital.
  • Obstetric anesthesiologists who specialize in the management of anesthesia, critical care and pain medicine for patients who are pregnant.
  • Physician assistants who work under the supervision of obstetricians/gynecologists to provide physical exams, diagnostic testing, procedures, medications and more.
  • Antepartum nurses who care for women admitted to the hospital during pregnancy. Your antepartum nurse is your primary point of contact for your healthcare team.
  • Social workers who specialize in coordinating resources for you and your growing family. They meet with you regularly to discuss your needs and what resources may be available to help fill these needs.
  • Antepartum floor unit coordinator who facilitates communication between you, your family, nurses, physicians and the other members of the team taking care of you.
  • Physical therapists who are available to help strengthen any muscles which may be weak due to a procedure or from not being used regularly during your hospital stay.
  • Dietitians who work closely with your care team to ensure you are getting the nutrients your body requires to keep you and your baby healthy.
  • Other medical or surgical subspecialists (adult and pediatric) who may provide care depending on your particular needs. Our team works with pediatric specialists from Boston Children’s Hospital.
  • Harvard medical students who rotate through the antepartum unit. BIDMC physicians are members of the faculty at Harvard Medical School and supervise all medical school students on a care team.
