Mother and Daughter Meditating at HomeDuring times of uncertainty, many people look for ways to calm their minds and reduce stress and anxiety. Meditation — the practice of using mindfulness, or focusing the mind on a particular object, thought, or activity — can help achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Mediation has many benefits including:
  • reducing stress
  • controlling anxiety
  • promoting emotional health
  • enhancing self-awareness

Aditi Nerurkar, MD, MPH, Director of the Cheng-Tsui Integrated Health Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) prescribes meditation, yoga and other integrated health approaches so her patients can minimize stress and even lower blood pressure and reduce pain, in some cases.

"I'm a doctor who prescribes medication and meditation, two words that differ by just one letter, but in reality, they're worlds apart," Nerurkar said.
