Become a Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) Patient/Family Advisor and partner with us to help improve the health outcomes for patients throughout the medical center. Your voice could lead to improvements in quality, safety, communication and hospital processes that have a dramatic impact on the patient care experience.

Building Partnerships with Patients and Families

Decades before Beth Israel and New England Deaconess hospitals came together as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, each was a leader in health care with a long history of personalized patient care and community service. The first Rights of Patients statement in the nation was implemented by Beth Israel Hospital in 1972 and BIDMC has been in the forefront among hospitals nationally in sharing information about the quality of our care with patients and the community at large. Over the past several years, BIDMC has been involved with efforts to bring patients and families into decision-making processes related to quality and safe care through the creation of patient and family councils, seating advisors on staff committees, and project-based feedback opportunities. BIDMC's Patient and Family Engagement program was featured as a promising practice for improving health outcomes and reducing costs in the September 2014 issue of the journal Health Affairs.

Advisory Councils    

  • Hospital-Wide Council: Our hospital-wide council partners with us to help improve the health outcomes and care experiences of patients throughout the medical center. We are seeking BIDMC patients and family members that have received care at the medical center in the last two years and can make a commitment to meet six times a year for a term of two years.
  • Universal Access Council: We are looking for BIDMC patients and employees with a variety of disabilities and access challenges to lend their voices to improve accessibility and utilization of BIDMC facilities and services. This council meets six times a year with advisors serving two year terms.
  • Newborn Intensive Care Unit Council: We are looking for BIDMC families (parents and caregivers) who have had a baby or babies in our Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) within the past two years to bring their experiences and perspectives and help us improve the care we provide to patients and families alike. This council meets three to four times a year with advisors serving a term of two years.
  • Intensive Care Unit Council: We are looking for BIDMC patients and families who have had an experience in one of our Intensive Care Units (ICU) to discuss issues that are important to patients and families during their ICU stay. This council meets six times a year with advisors serving two year terms.

  • Patient and family member advisors are serving with staff on various quality improvement committees at the medical center.
    • Patient Care Committee
    • Patient Education Committee
    • Ethics Advisory Committee
    • STAAR Committee
    • Medication Safety Subcommittee
    • Critical Care Executive Committee
    • Committee on Clinical Investigations (IRB)
    • Drug Shortage Task Force

Focus Group and Project Opportunities for Advisors

  • Advisors are participating in focus groups and other one-time commitments to lend their voices to particular projects. Examples of these projects include focus groups on:
    • The Spine Center,
    • The new BID Cancer Center at Needham
    • Medication discharge
    • Medication administration, along with a Lean process improvement event
    • The BreastCare Center
    • Peri-Operative Services
    • Pre-Admissions Testing, along with a Lean process improvement event
  • Advisors also:
    • Give feedback on the BIDMC website and Visitor's Guide
    • Participate as actors in simulation center training
    • Contribute to planning for waiting room renovations
    • Teach physicians through the Patient Teachers in Patient Safety Education project
    • Tell their stories as part of training videos
    • Participate in research by serving as key informants to researchers
