Skin/Cutaneous Oncology Program

Nationally recognized leader in skin cancer care, management, and investigation.

The Cutaneous Oncology program includes a Pigmented Lesion Clinic, a Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Oncology Clinic, and a Biologic Therapy Clinic. In the Pigmented Lesion Clinic, physicians use sophisticated digital technology to monitor patients with multiple atypical moles who are at high risk for melanoma. In the Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Oncology Clinic, medical oncologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists, dermatologists, pathologists, and radiologists work together to provide a coordinated evaluation and treatment plan for patients with complicated skin cancers, such as melanoma, cutaneous lymphomas, and other skin malignancies. The Biologic Therapy Clinic provides cutting edge therapy and research options for patients with advanced melanoma. Cutaneous Oncology Program efforts have been instrumental in identifying new risk factors of melanoma recurrence, validating novel staging procedures, and developing new therapies for all stages of this disease.

Active areas of investigation involve:

  • melanoma prevention
  • the genetics of melanoma in high-risk families
  • adjuvant therapy in patients with high-risk melanomas
  • cytokine and vaccine-based immunotherapy
  • assessing and manipulating tumor-induced immune suppression
  • several promising molecularly targeted therapies
  • identification of factors associated with disease progression or predictive of response-to-therapy

Many of these activities are supported through the NCI-sponsored skin cancer SPORE grant - one of 5 such grants nationwide.
