Nationally Recognized Urologic Care

Andrew A. Wagner, MD reviews a BIDMC patient's x-rays.

Welcome to the Division of Urologic Surgery at BIDMC, which provides patient care at our flagship hospital in Boston as well as Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton and Beth Israel Deaconess HealthCare-Chestnut Hill. Choosing BIDMC urologic surgery means you are choosing the most highly qualified and skilled urologic surgeons in New England.

Our team of highly experienced, fellowship-trained urologists, all of whom are on the faculty of Harvard Medical School, provides comprehensive, patient-centered care and the most advanced treatments — including the latest minimally invasive/robotic and laser ablation procedures — for men and women with all types of urologic conditions. In fact, we have the most experience in the region in performing minimally invasive/robotic procedures for complex urologic conditions and are considered a national leader in these techniques.

For example, 90 percent of our procedures for kidney cancer are performed minimally invasively. We are also one of the only academic centers in New England to offer robotic radical cystectomy (removal of the bladder and surrounding organs and urinary diversion) for patients with advanced bladder cancer, and we achieve excellent outcomes for patients undergoing robotic prostatectomy or laser ablation for enlarged prostate (BPH).

We are also national leaders in the research and use of active surveillance for selected patients with low-risk prostate or kidney cancer, sparing them unnecessary surgical treatment and preserving quality of life.

In our ongoing effort to provide the best possible care, we track all of our patients' outcomes, including their quality of life, and publish our results in leading academic journals so that others may benefit from our research. Our urologists also conduct research in many other areas. These include investigations of kidney stone prevention, evaluation of overactive bladder, prostate cancer diagnosis, cost-effectiveness of robotic and minimally invasive procedures, and recovery trends and narcotic use after major surgery.

In addition to our leadership in patient care and research, we educate and train future urologists through our Minimally Invasive Fellowship Program, and soon through our upcoming Urology Residency Program.

We invite you to learn more about all of our programs and services on our website. And check out our newsletter, which provides information about our many strengths in the treatment of patients with prostate, kidney and bladder cancer.

Thank you for considering BIDMC Urologic Surgery for your care. We look forward to caring for you and your family.
