Teleconference:Breast Reconstruction

Making a decision about breast reconstrution is incredibly difficult. Since breast surgeons appropriately offer this option to women who are planning a mastectomy, and since immediate reconstruction is usually one of the choices, there is time pressure amid a very stressful and anxious period. No one is thinking her most clearly around the time of a breast cancer diagnosis. There are a number of options, and individual plastic surgeons often have a personal choice which may be strongly suggested. Partly for this reason, I always suggest meeting with at least two before making a final decision. It is also always very helpful to talk with other women who have been through the kind of reconstruction which you are considering. You always hear something different from the patient than from the doctor!
Remember, too, that, although immediate reconstruction is usually possible and will save another surgery and hospital stay, it is also possible to delay the process. Some women find it simpler to deal with the cancer first and then circle back, after treatment is done, to consider reconstruction options. Plastic surgeons generally say that the cosmetic results will be better if it is done simulataneously with the mastectomy, but this may or may not always be the case. It is also possible to opt for no reconstruction. Women considering this should look at www.breastfree.org
