Free Teleconference: "New Normal"

Today's entry has some connection to yesterday's as the focus remains on what happens after treatment. I kind of hate the expression "new normal", but it is commonly used to describe the bodies and lives that we experience when active cancer treatment is behind us. Although it is much too long to be used in a sentence, I much prefer the explanation given by a woman years ago. She described this period as a rebuilding, feeling that her body and her life were like a bombed out city. Brick by brick, she said, she was putting the pieces back together and constructing buildings and avenues and parks that were similar, but not identical, to the ones that the earlier city had boasted. What I especially like about this metaphor is the idea that we can thoughtfully place the bricks. Going through cancer usually forces us to step out of daily rhythms and gives us an opportunity to think about how we want to live. It is likely that many of our daily routines are due more to habit than to concious choice, and taking this time out makes it possible to make positive changes--or to decide that we liked everything just the way it was.

Anyhow, this is an upcoming free teleconference from Living Beyond Breast Cancer about the physical and psychological impact of cancer and recreating our lives.
