Nutrition and Cancer Risk

There has probably been more written about nutrition and its impact on breast cancer than almost any other cancer-related topic. Unfortunately, most of it is bogus (e.g. the "cancer prevention diet"), and much of the rest of it is uncertain. As far as anyone knows, there is no specific diet that has any impact at all on cancer risk or cancer recurrence. What we do know that is that a healthy diet, heavy on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and light on red meat, is good for us. Whether it makes any difference re breast cancer, we don't know, but it will be beneficial for our general health.
Here is an excerpt and a link to a recent Living Beyond Breast Cancer (www.lbbc.org) article on this topic:
November 2010 Ask the Expert: Nutrition
If you are undergoing breast cancer treatment, nutrition may not be the first thing on your mind. But following a smart diet strategy may reduce your risk of recurrence—and make you feel better. A balanced diet can also help maintain strength, improve immune function and promote healing.
If you have questions about how nutrition can help you improve your overall health and quality of life, ask Living Beyond Breast Cancer expert Kathryn A. Allen, MA, RD, CSO, your question.
