I Hope You Dance

We will be leaving Egypt late tonight (actually early tomorrow morning, a 12:30 am departure). Over the past two weeks, I have tried to primarily focus on the subject of this blog, but to include bits and pieces of the marvels of this trip. Never know how much of my personal life to include here, and I tend to err on the side of less, not more.

I can't, however, refrain from concluding this Egypt chapter with a picture and a few comments about one remarkable moment. We were wandering through the narrow and winding streets of Old Cairo, taking in the sights and sounds and smells. Treasures for all our senses were on all sides. Suddenly, we heard music and clapping and laughter. Our guide hurried in the direction of what I first thought was a street fair or small festival.

Wrong. It was one of the preludes to a wedding scheduled (we think) for later in the day. The street was full of women and children (no men); they were dancing and clapping and surrounding the bride with affection and support. Her wedding gifts were displayed nearby, so all could admire the cookware and quilts and dishes.

Our guide joined the festivities and, with all the other dancing women, began to motion to me to join them. One positive result of two cancers and getting older has been the loss of most of my worries about making a fool of myself. The refrain from the song, "I Hope You Dance", came into my mind and into the circle I went.

Here's to life and to dancing whenever we can!
