  • Today is Kangaroo Care Day

    You may not have known, but today, May 15th Is International Kangaroo Care Day, also called “Skin to Skin.” What is Skin to Skin? It means placing your baby, in only a diaper, against your naked chest. Your baby can have her/his back covered with a blanket, but is lying belly to chest against you. It is a common practice for babies who are born early, but in fact, all babies benefit from skin to skin.

  • How to Clean a Pacifier

    Its Mother’s Day this Sunday, and I know that I should be writing something inspirational or poignant about motherhood, but during my Monday morning commute this week, I was listing to “Morning Edition” on NPR, and I just have to share in case you missed it.   • No Spoiling

    At some point in our pre-parenting lives, most of us have heard that you can’t spoil a baby. So why is it then, that as soon as we become parents, any progress in our slowly developing parental self -confidence is completely shaken when anyone makes the accusation, “You’re going to spoil that baby.” Read more...   • Circumcision

    It’s a boy! Perhaps you learned the gender of your baby while you were pregnant, or perhaps you waited until your baby was born. Regardless of when you learned that your baby was a boy, you will need to make a decision about circumcision. Circumcision is the surgical removal of the skin covering the end of the penis (the foreskin). For some families this is done as part of religious ritual, for many families it is performed by a doctor at the hospital within the first few days of life. Read more... Comments (0)
  • Perspective

    Typcially, the content of this blog is focused on the adjustment  of becoming a parent. Today, writing about breastfeeding struggles or sleep deprivation just doesn't feel right. Not that those issues aren't challenging,  they are, but like most things, the questions and challenges we face in the newborn period seem to have a way of working themselves out. But today,   I just can't stop thinking about the parents of a little eight year old boy from Dorchester, and how their lives will never be the same.
