Health care "don'ts"

The American Board of Internal Medicine is out with a campaign that says health care consumers should be "Choosing Wisely" when it comes to tests and other procedures.

BIDMC Cancer Center Clinical Director Lowell Schnipper took the lead for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, offering up the top five things physicians and patients should question in planning treatment.

Schnipper told The Boston Globe that even when professional organizations issue clinical guidelines for oncologists to follow, many don't adhere to them.

"Cancer is to some extent a special case," he said. "The anxiety of patients is high and doctors want to make sure every single 'i' is dotted and to assure the patient that everything possible is being done."

The Globe also spoke with BIDMC primary care physician Jacques Carter, for his take on recommendations from the American Academy of Family Physicians.
