BIDMC's Dr. Daniel Leffler thinks we may be on a path that could eventually help Celiac disease sufferers deal with their intolerance to gluten -- the protein in wheat, rye and barley that triggers an immune reaction in the gut.
Leffler tells the Los Angeles Times that some oral enzymes may be helpful in breaking down gluten, an advance that would enable patients to shed some of their dieraty restrictions.
"From the early data it looks like the oral enzymes break down enough gluten to be useful," he says.
