Cerebrospinal Fluid Flow Imaging

(In collaboration with Yasushi Shibata, MD, PhD, Department of Radiology, BIDMC.)
Image sequence following injection of an indocyanine green (ICG)-high density lipoprotein (HDL) complex into the lumbar spine subarachnoid space of a nude mouse. In the control image (lower left), recorded prior to injection, the arrow shows the approximate location of the injection at L5. Regions of interest are placed on the left ear and cerebellum and the resulting progression of contrast is shown in the graph. ICG-HDL concentration in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the brain of a normal mouse peaks at between two and three hours post administration. This technique is used in the development of a mouse model of hydrocephalus.
