Harvard Medical School
Dr. Xinhua Chen is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received his B.Sc. degree in Biology from Beijing University and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Southern California. He was further trained by Dr. Ciarán Kelly as Research Fellow in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dr. Chen studies the interactions among gut microbes, pathogens and the mammalian host. His current research projects include Clostridium difficile pathogenesis and probiotic mechanisms. Dr. Chen is interested in understanding how commensal microflora or probiotic microbes interfere with virulence factors from enteric pathogens, or how they modulate host immune response, by specific molecular products. He is a recipient of numerous awards including research fellowship award and career development award from Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America, Young Investigator Award from the Global Probiotics Council, and Merck MISP award.
