PhD, Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology

Following her clinical training in internal medicine and cardiology at the University of Rome (Italy) “La Sapienza,” Dr. del Monte completed her PhD training in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology at Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, U.K. Her PhD focused on investigations of mechanisms of heart failure in animal and human myocytes.

Training at MGH in Molecular Biology and Gene Therapy

Dr. del Monte then returned to Italy as staff clinical cardiologist and later joined the Department of Cardiovascular Research at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) -- Harvard Medical School for further training in molecular biology and gene therapy. At Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. del Monte focused on the mechanisms of Ca2+ handling in heart failure and in vitro and in vivo gene transfer and become an independent investigator in the Cardiovascular Research Center (CVRC). Her independent research program focused on the molecular abnormalities underlying the pathogenesis of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy leading to heart failure.

Joined BIDMC in 2007

In October 2007, Dr. del Monte joined the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC).

Scientific Relationship with Europe

Dr. del Monte is engaged in supporting the scientific relationship with Europe for the development of opportunities for scientific growth for young clinicians and scientists. She coordinates the USA site of a Harvard Armenise Research with three Universities in Italy. She is also the coordinator for the Boston segment of Urania Sciences, an Italian association aimed to create a network between the United States and Italy to promote the bidirectional transfer of the scientific knowledge between these two Nations.
