Patient Experience

Overall Rating - Inpatient Orthopaedics Service

What are we measuring?

Percentage of patients who received inpatient orthopaedic care that gave a rating of "9 or 10" on a scale from 0 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for overall quality score.

Why is this important?

Finding out how our patients experience the care that we provide at BIDMC is one aspect of quality and an important measure of our performance. By surveying our patients we can evaluate how we our meeting our patients' needs from both a clinical and an operational perspective, and then make changes to improve the services we provide that patients say are important to them.

What is our most recent performance and trend?

Getting an Appointment when Needed

What are we measuring?

The percent of new patients referred for surgical joint evaluation that respond "always" when asked if they got their appointment as soon as needed.

Why is this important?

Patients referred to a BIDMC specialist by a primary care doctor should have quick and easy access to care for their orthopaedic problem.

What are we doing to improve?

We continue to evaluate all the provider schedules in an effort to increase the number of appointments and create more slots for urgent patients.  We added more appointments each month across all the providers.  We also created an email system for Primary Care Physicians to refer patients for immediate triage.  BIDMC's Orthopedic team is working together to improve access to care so that initial evaluations are more available.

Likelihood to Recommend - Outpatient Clinic

What are we measuring?

The percentage of clinic patients who responded "Yes Definitely" when asked if they would recommend BIDMC outpatient orthopaedic clinic to others.

What is our most recent performance and trend?

What are we doing to improve our performance?

At BIDMC, we recognize that among the factors influencing a patient's willingness to recommend is the amount of time waiting to be seen by a care provider at an appointment. To address this, we have initiated an effort to reduce waiting times and to communicate more proactively with our patients when there are delays.
