Awards


  • Leapfrog Top Hospital - 2007 BIDMC is one of 41 hospitals nationwide to be recognized for quality and patient safety practices, specifically: computer physician order entry, evidence-based hospital referrals, an intensive care unit (ICU) that is staffed by physicians experienced in critical care medicine, and ranking based on 27 other quality and safety practice measures.
  • John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award - 2007
    INNOVATION IN PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL
    BIDMC is being recognized for dramatically improving overall patient safety and quality of obstetric care. BIDMC staff members were able to accomplish this by using Crew Resource Management (CRM) principles in their daily work.   • Foundation for Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)
    BIDMC’s stem cell transplant program was the second program in Boston to be accredited by FACT. Founded in 1996, FACT is a non-profit organization co-founded by the International Society for Cellular Therapy (ISCT) and the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation (ASBMT) that promotes high-quality patient care and laboratory performance through voluntary inspection and accreditation in the field of cellular therapy. Accreditation by FACT is now recognized as the gold standard for approval of transplant programs in North America.
  • First Recipient of Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA Health Care Excellence Award: Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology - 2007
  • Thomson 100 Top Hospital: National Benchmarks for Success - 2005 and 2007
    One of only 15 major teaching hospitals in the country honored.
  • Solucient 100 Top Hospital: Cardiovascular Hospitals - 2006
    BIDMC was named as a high-performing cardiovascular hospital.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield 'Blue Center for Cardiac Care' - 2006
    BIDMC was named Blue Distinction Center (SM) for Cardiac Care by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (BCBSMA). This national distinction recognizes the exceptional quality of care that patients receive.
  • US News & World Report “Best Hospitals” edition - 2006
    BIDMC placed among the top hospitals nationally in six clinical specialty: hormonal disorders, digestive disorders,respiratory care, heart and heart surgery, cancer care, kidney diseases.
  • Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer - 2006
    BIDMC’s cancer program was the only program in Massachusetts, and one of only 34 in the country, to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Commission on Cancer, a consortium of professional organizations that includes the American Cancer Society, the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the Oncology Nursing Society and members of the American College of Surgeons.
  • The Medal of Honor for Organ Donation - 2005, 2006, 2007
    BIDMC’s abdominal transplant center – the largest in New England - led  to BIDMC being awarded the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medal of Honor for being a top performing organ donation hospital.
  • Solucient Top 100 Hospital Award: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success Study, 7th Edition - 2005
    BIDMC was named a high-performing cardiovascular hospital.

Accreditations


  • The Joint Commission for (TJC) -
    In 2007, BIDMC was awarded accredidation from the Joint Commission under the Commission's new unannounced, on-site evaluation program. The Accredidation award recognizes BIDMC's dedication to complying with the Joint Commission's state-of-the-art standards on a continuous basis.
  • Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO) -
    In 2004, both BIDMC and its affiliate BID–Needham passed the JCAHO survey with perfect scores. JCAHO evaluates and accredits more than 15,000 health care organizations and programs in the U.S. Only approximately three percent achieve perfect scores.
  • Accreditation by American College of Surgeons for:
    • BIDMC’s Level 1a Bariatric Center was First Weight Loss Program in Massachusetts to be Certified by the ACS
    • BIDMC’s Carl J. Shapiro Simulation and Skills Center was accredited as a Level 1 facility, the first in Boston and New England – and one of only seven inaugural certified centers in the United States to provide simulation-based skills training to health care students and professionals from all medical and surgical disciplines.
