Cardiovascular Care

The Cardiovascular Institute (CVI) at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center is dedicated exclusively to delivering all aspects of heart and vascular care to you and your family. The CVI combines cardiovascular medicinecardiac surgery and vascular and endovascular surgery.

When choosing a hospital, patients in need of cardiac care should consider the hospitals experience, patient outcomes, efficiency of care and patient satisfaction with care.

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is a cardiac surgery in which the blocked coronary artery is bypassed with the patient's own vessel to improve the blood flow to the heart.  Isolated Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) is an operation in which CABG is the only major cardiac surgery performed (without valve or heart rhythmn surgery).

Aortic Valve Replacement

Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR) is a cardiac surgery for treatment of narrowing (stenosis) or leakage (regurgitation) of the aortic valve. Sometimes, the valve can be repaired, but most often, it is replaced with a valve made of animal tissue or a mechanical valve. Isolated AVR (Aortic Valve Replacement) is an operation in which AVR is the only major cardiac surgery performed (without CABG or heart rhythmn surgery).

Interventional Cardiology

Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) is the insertion of a catheter (tube) into an artery supplying the heart muscle to reduce the narrowing to improve blood flow to the heart. Sometimes, a metal stent is inserted to keep the artery propped open.
