Hospital-Wide Advisory Council
As a part of our efforts to make care more patient and family centered, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) created a Hospital-Wide Advisory Council in September 2010.
What is the mission of the council?
The mission of the BIDMC Patient/Family Advisory Council is to ensure that patients and their families come first and are consistently treated with respect, compassion, and the highest quality of care in all aspects of the BIDMC experience.
It will accomplish this by actively collaborating with BIDMC leadership to ensure that the diverse voices of patients/families are included in all aspects of care, generating advice that leads to tangible changes in the organization.
Who is eligible to join the council?
BIDMC seeks patients and family members that have received care at the medical center in the last two years. This may have been through outpatient services, through an inpatient stay or both. We believe that this group should reflect the diversity of our patient population and the broad range of services provided at BIDMC.
What are the areas of focus?
Members of this council offer input on issues that affect patient care throughout the hospital. Topics for discussion are priorities brought forward by the council, as well as projects brought by staff seeking patient and family feedback.
Issues for discussion have included:
- Preparing patients for discharge and reducing readmissions
- Patient and family arrival on the day of surgery
- Patient information and education materials
- Strengthening coordination of care among providers
- The patient and family perspective on BIDMC's CEO search
- Initiatives in the Emergency Department
- BIDMC's support services and improvements to food services
- The ideal healing environment
- Models to improve communication between patients, families and their providers
What is the commitment?
The council meets six times a year on a bi-monthly basis. Members are asked to commit to a two year term. Evening meetings are approximately two hours in length.
Do you provide food and parking?
We provide parking vouchers and food during mealtimes for meetings at BIDMC.
