Telephone Service

Private Telephone for Each Patient

A private telephone is provided for each patient's use and are hearing-aid compatible.

Making Phone Calls

Calls within the 617, 781 and 508 area codes are free of charge.

All other calls must be charged to a calling card or another number (such as your home phone number) or must be placed as collect calls.

  • Using an outside operator to place a collect all or to charge a call to another number can be very expensive. Even for calls within Massachusetts, a surcharge of as much as $8 may be charged by the telephone company for one call (regardless of the length of the call). These charges are made by the phone company completing the call and not by the medical center. The medical center is not able to reduce these charges.
  • We recommend that you use a calling card to place calls beyond the local area. Calling cards can be purchased in the gift shops on the east or west campus.
  • If possible, have family and friends call you at designated times since there is no charge for incoming calls to your room. Your family and friends may reach you by dialing your direct phone number, which you should find posted near your bed. Or, those wishing to reach you may call patient information at 617-754-2200. Callers who ask about you (using your full name) can then be given your direct number and/or be connected to your room, unless you have requested that your information remain private.

Receiving Phone Calls

There is no charge for receiving incoming calls to your room. Your family and friends may reach you by:

  • Dialing your direct phone number, which you should find posted near your bed.
  • Call patient information at 617-754-2200. Callers who ask about you (using your full name) can then be given your direct number and/or be connected to your room, unless you have requested that your information remain private.
